Penned to Perfection: Meet Our Essay Champions!
The Dr. Barbara Seniors Harkins Foundation is thrilled to announce the winners of the 2024-2025 Essay Contest: Lexie Bishop from Ross N. Robinson Middle School in Kingsport, TN (1st Place) and Aydin Soner from Ubuntu Nation Builders Academy in Columbia, SC (2nd Place). This year’s contest challenged students in grades 6-8 to reflect on a movie or TV scene where they share a meal with a historical figure, prompting them to consider the figure’s portrayal and the questions they would ask to learn more. The first-place winner was awarded a Nextbook 7″ Tablet, while the second-place recipient received a $50.00 Gift Certificate from Barnes and Noble.
The Foundation received several entries, and the judging panel, composed of foundation board members and volunteers, was deeply impressed by the students’ insightful essays and the diverse range of historical figures they chose to explore. Charlene Brandon, a foundation board member and contest judge, expressed her inspiration and hope for the future after reading the submissions. The Dr. Barbara Seniors Harkins Foundation extends its congratulations to Lexie and Aydin for their outstanding achievements!
