Volunteer Spotlight: An Interview with Sarah Jimenez

Sarah is a regular volunteer with our Film Screening Program and a firm believer in the importance empowering youth. We asked her about what motivates her to Volunteer at the Foundation.

How did you become a Volunteer with our Foundation? While volunteering for the nonprofit “Blazers” as a student at USC, I came to know Elisia and BSHF. I became very passionate about empowering youth and BSHF has continued to give me an outlet to do so.

What made you want to become a Volunteer with our Foundation? I first began volunteering with the organization’s Book Club and admired the dedication that Elisia had for the youth that she was working to serve. Elisia and other parent volunteers always went above and beyond to make sure Book Club students had appropriate resources to help them excel with their reading. BSHF made learning fun. While starting out as a volunteer in the area surrounding USC, I watched Elisia provide valuable education to students through enjoyable activities like field trips to the local library or establishments in their community. I feel that this exposure provided those kids with opportunities to explore tools that will help them to succeed in the future. This is what makes the organization so special!

What are some of the things that you do for our Foundation as a Volunteer? I currently help to make the film program’s movie days interactive for students. I provide Trivia questions or students to answer following the viewing of the movie so that they have chances to win prizes.

Tell us about yourself: What do you do/Do you attend school/What is your major? I currently work as a Medical Assistant at an Allergy and Immunology clinic in Ventura County. I graduated from USC in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Sciences with a minor in Health Care Studies. I will be attending USC’s Physician Assistant Program starting August of 2022 and I hope to continue volunteering with BSHF.

What are your hobbies? In my free time, I love to play soccer. I currently play on 2 adult leagues in my hometown. I also love to workout at the gym and hangout with family and friends! I love going to the beach since it isn’t too far from my hometown… as long as it’s nice and warm
