This month we are Spotlighting our Volunteer: Erigena Sallaku, who volunteers with our Film Workshops and Film Screening Programs. We asked her about how she started volunteering with us, and why she loves our Foundation!

I came across Dr. BSH Foundation through Indeed.com as they were looking for volunteers to help with an in-person filmmaking workshop back in 2019. I think what drew me to them was their vision to create opportunities for students to learn about all facets of filmmaking by connecting them with current, inspirational professionals in the film industry. I wanted to serve and be part of that experience and ended up gaining so much more than I gave. I got to meet Elisia and her warmth and passion for the students’ education was compelling. This foundation works hard at reaching out to experienced filmmakers, actors, producers, directors, screenwriters, animators because they know that these industry professionals provide invaluable experience and knowledge to the students at a time when they need the greatest encouragement and guidance to make their dreams come true. The ways in which I currently participate with BSH is by attending online film screenings, engaging with the students as we watch a movie: ask questions, create opportunities for free dialogue and processing of a scene. I also host the trivia games where in the spirit of fun the students get to test themselves and earn prizes. I also love to encourage students to not be afraid to ask the panelists all questions so they can learn about the craft. I’m a claims manager for a medical company, but an aspiring screenwriter and filmmaker at heart. I hold a BA in Communication and MFA in Creative Writing.
Thank you Erigena for sharing your story with us. We are so lucky to have you as a member of our team!
